Workshop on Web Mining
April 7, 2001
Midland Hotel, Chicago, Illinois

To be Held in Conjunction with
First SIAM International Conference on Data Mining (SDM 2001)

Theme Statement

With the explosive use of the Internet, there is an ever-increasing volume of Web data being generated and warehoused in numerous Web sites. The vastness of accessible on-line information has opened up a host of new opportunities, several of which cannot be readily addressed using existing knowledge discovery and data analysis methods. As a result, there has been a rapid growth in the field of Web Mining, which focuses on the development of new tools and technologies for the analysis of Web data, be it in the form of the content of web pages, their hyperlink structure, or usage of the web as reflected, for example, in web logs. Web mining applies data mining techniques to extract knowledge from this data, that can then be used to make web sites more effective, for the visitors and for the owners.

A one-day workshop on Web Mining is being held in conjunction with SDM 2001 in Chicago to bring together researchers from a variety of background and disciplines to discuss their work and findings that could help extract valuable information from Web data.
